Lately I have been trying to listen to audio books while driving to and from school. Sometimes I can even listen to them while at work. I recently finished listening to Homer’s Iliad.

As you may know the story involves three predominant character groups; Grecians, Trojans, and Grecian gods. Most of the story involves the Grecians attempting to invade the city of Troy, but the gods are constantly causing mischief. Zeus and Apollo seem to be helping Hector (leader of the Trojans), while Poseidon and other gods favor Achilles, who is with the Greeks.

As I listened there was one particular line that caught my attention. Perhaps it simply stood out because I had heard it used multiple times. In conversation to a fellow warrior, Hector says, “I am not afraid of Ajax nor of any man, but this I know. That Zeus gives victory now to one and now to another. This only do I fear and this only, to go against the will of Zeus.” I could not help but listen and think at the same time how much different this god was from Jehovah. I was reminded of the verse in I Corinthians 10:13.

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (ESV)

Simply put Zeus was fickle. Jehovah is faithful. Zeus may give victory depending on his whim. Jehovah has always provided a way of escape. He will give you the ability to endure it. In essence He has guaranteed you the victory over sin. Jehovah is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Rev. 13:8). We know that God’s will for us as revealed in His Word, and we don’t have to be guessing whether His is on our side today or against us tomorrow. He will never abandon us!
